The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) Design Gallery is a series of three shops that promoting 100% Hong Kong designed products – household, fashion and jewelry. The Design Gallery’ is inherently consisting of certain conflicting identities and requirements: a gallery with spacious setting to dignify each design piece, versus a shop to display a maximum quantity of products; a gallery of neatly curated exhibits, versus a shop of goods in a vast diversity of forms.

Our design solution is to use a simple stepping platform to provide a horizontal array of plinths for flexible arrangement of products. Each product has a neutral gallery-backdrop, and sits on an open plinth instead of typical goods shelves. Above the plinths are fabric light boxes printed with designers’ portraits. On the other wall, a grid of wooden pencils are anchored as hooks for hanging products. The pencils recalls the sketching process of design.

The use of simple geometry and neutral colors tie the goods together, with space around to give importance to each piece.
